Every year, various rankings have consistently ranked the University of Waterloo as one of the top universities in the country. Waterloo is the only university in Canada with a Faculty of Mathematics. Our computer science and mathematics programs are recognized around the world and we were the first university in Canada to have a Bioinformatics program. You probably know all this, so why the reminder?

If we want to continue to keep our reputation intact and continue to improve the university, it is important that those with power make smart decisions that will affect future operations of the University.

Have you ever walked around campus, noticed a new building and wondered what it is, and whom it is for? Have you ever wondered why there are more and more incoming students every year? Have you ever encountered a procedure or policy and wondered where it came from? Have you ever encountered a laser-studded W and wondered what it is for? Have you ever had the feeling that the University administration is ignoring your opinions, your thoughts, your wishes, and your voices?

Believe it or not, you do have a voice on campus. Your UW Mathematics Senate Representative has the responsibility to represent your ideas and thoughts in Senate, and potentially change the future of the University.

As a 3B Mathematical Finance student running to represent your voice in Senate, I invite you to contemplate the following things.

Think Possibility – A lot can happen in a few years. In my last 4 years at the university, I have seen 1 entire building go up, 2 more enter the stages of construction, and a new math building break ground. Given another few years, what else can you envision at the University of Waterloo?

Think Change – Doubtlessly, there are things you want to change at the University. Jobmine, Quest, and UWACE frequently come to mind, but what else would you like to see change for the better?

Think Green – The movement towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable university starts with your ideas. Open discussion on how this can happen must begin with new ideas on being green.

Think about You – Your ideas, your thoughts, your wants, and your needs must be taken into consideration. You’re paying thousands of dollars a term for a world class education; make the most of it.

Think Sarah Sun – I want to listen to your ideas about the university. Furthermore, I want to explore the ideas that students in the Faculty have for the University, and bring them to the table. Ultimately, it’s your future, and choosing the right representative in Senate is one step towards making your ideas count.
